Garlic; Good for our Health!
Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Did you know that one clove of garlic contains around 12 mg of potassium, 5 mg of calcium and over 100 sulfuric compounds that can effectively fight bacterial infections? If you can get past its pungent smell, raw garlic is definitely the best one to eat, as it has been scientifically proven to lower blood pressure, fight cholesterol and kill parasites.
Here is a recipe for roasted garlic and garlic oil, two immunity-friendly must-haves in your summer kitchen. Use this low-calorie garlic mash to add flavor to anything from soups to stews to garlic bruschetta starters. The mash also works for grilled fish or chicken. The garlic oil can be used to replace olive oil in cooked or fresh dishes and salads, to roast tomatoes or grill vegetables.
What you need:
4 large garlic heads
3 cups olive oil
4 sprigs fresh rosemary / thyme
2 teaspoons black peppercorns
How you do it:
First of all, preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Then cut each garlic head into four without peeling the cloves and leaving the skins intact. Place the pieces of garlic in a casserole dish and pour enough olive oil to cover them, add the herbs and bake for about an hour until the cloves have softened and released their full flavor. Cool the mixture, then strain the garlic oil in a separate dish (a glass bottle for example) and store it at room temperature. Mash the garlic after removing the skins and place it in the fridge in an airtight container. It will hold for up to three weeks. Voila!
A beautiful world to see!
Tuesday, May 20, 2008
As the saying goes "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" it only implies that our eyes are an important part of our body. It is the only way we can appreciate the beauty of the world such as the smile of our kid, the sunrise and sunset and many more. For this reason, some people are being over protected while other just seems to ignore the importance of their eyes. Continually abusing the use of the eyes can lead to significant damage.
There are many ways to keep eyes in better condition such as eating foods rich with vitamin-A, wearing sunglasses during hot days and eyeglasses that can protect from computer radiation. Also, wearing eyeglasses that can help strengthen ocular muscle such as pinhole eyeglasses will help improve better vision.
Let's face it; we can't stop our eyes from getting strained in reading, watching TV, and exposure to computer. All of these can lead to different eye disorder such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, astigmatism, computer vision syndrome or cataracts. Another factor is age since; as we grow older our vision gets weaker. A perfect medication would be, to use a proper gadget like pinhole glasses.
Pinhole eyeglasses prove its effectiveness in eye medication through 50 years of serving customers. The best thing about this device is that it does cure eye disorder but also prevents eye deterioration. This is an alternative that should be considered due to the trail of evidence it left that is an equal performance to expensive prescription eyeglasses. They had gained popularity for this reason. Because of high demand of this glasses manufacturers develops a more stylish and well-finished designs; that is in tuned for this generation.
Eating Together, Stay Together
Saturday, May 10, 2008
When was the last time you, your husband, and your kids ate together as a whole family? Mealtimes are perfect venues for spending quality time, as family members come together from their separate, daily lives and enjoy one another's company. Eating together not only keeps the family bonded through conversation, it also contributes to the well being of your children. A study reports that family meals lessens the risk of teenage developing substance abuse problems, and improves their school performance.
For all tea drinkers
Friday, May 9, 2008
Lots of studies have shown the health benefits of tea – it lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and possibly certain cancers. But does it deliver its most touted benefit; to soothe and calm? To find out, British researchers divided 75 tea drinkers into two groups. One drank four cups of black tea a day, while the other has “placebo tea” – identical in taste, smell and caffeine content, but lacking active tea ingredients. Six weeks later, the groups underwent a stressful challenge. Immediately after, the black tea drinkers had lower levels of stress hormone cortisol than those who’d been drinking the placebo. High level of cortisol can weaken your immune system; they’ve also been linked to cravings for high-fat, high-sugar foods. So if a bad day has you yearning for a brownie, try sipping tea instead.

Super way to clean your piano
If your pianos are plastic, rub them with a chamois cloth dipped in vinegar mixed with warm water. However, if they are ivory use a barely damp cloth and bit of gentle soap to wipe (remember – do not let the moisture leak down the sides); dry them ASAP. Use another damp cloth for the black keys. Buff with a third, lint-free cloth. Never scrub or use chemicals like rubbing alcohol. Take note: discolored keys like white turned yellow can be cleaned but could not be restored to their original whiteness.
