By definition, numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects. However, the term numismatist applies to collectors and coin dealers as well as scholars using coins as source or studying coins.
Today the number of people collecting coins is increasing. There are those with the purpose of investments and others are just for hobbies. Whatever their purpose, it is indeed helping the industry of coins. That is why Kennedy Half Dollar is in high demand as of 2009. It pushed The United States Mint to produce more of these coins even though it’s no longer used in the circulation, but for the sake of collectors.
Basically, The United States Mint primarily produces circulating coinage for the United States to conduct its trade and commerce. They are the ones responsible for everything in line with special coin sets for collectors, national medals, American Eagle gold, silver and platinum bullion coins, and commemorative coins marking national events such as the Bicentennial of the Constitution.
As the number of coin collectors increased, the number of coin photo collectors also increased. As the use of the Internet and electronic visual media becomes more of a vital part of the coin industry, photographing coins, either raw or slabbed, has become an increasing concern with collectors and dealers. However, some coin photographers faced several problems in getting the right photo.
But, issues and concerns will be aided by the help of a book the Numismatic Photography. This book is published by Zyrus Press and authored by Mark Goodman. It teaches the reader in an easy-to-read and visually rich guidebook format on how to image quality photos of coins using digital camera. It addresses typical problems faced by the photographer like getting detailed image, recommends ways of improvements and offers specific tips and techniques for raw and slabbed coins. This book is actually an impressive addition to the coin collector’s arsenal of knowledge.
Photographers can take advantage of the many helpful chapters of this book. Some of the chapters included are Imaging Concepts, Color and Luster, High Contrast Coins, Low Contrast Coins, Toned Coins, Special Imaging Techniques and Image Presentation, among others. The book also includes two appendices: a Troubleshooting Guide and General Rules for Coin Photography. Indeed, it is a great tool for all photographers interested in coins.
