Perhaps, you’ve heard all the warnings by your mother growing up. “Don’t eat too much chocolate, you’ll break out!” You’d have to sneak out of the house to get a chocolate fix. And if you were like most kids, you did anything to get that fix.
Chocolate has been blamed for many ailments including acne, tooth decay, obesity, and lacking of food value. It has also been known to have an anti-depressant effect, cause hypertension and even have an aphrodisiac effect.
We know that chocolate is basically harmless unless, like everything else, it is over-consumed. Chocolate has been found not to cause nor aggravate outbreaks of acne. These results are backed up by further research that shows acne in no way is affected by chocolate.
Recent scientific studies have suggested chocolate boosts the serotonin in the brain that produces a calming effect and stability. Stress has been identified as a cause of acne. If chocolate stimulates the serotonin and calms the nerves, then chocolate could ironically be found to assist in acne restraint.

Most of the complications from diabetes are related to its damaging effects on blood vessels. That means anything you do that further damages your blood vessels – such as smoking, not exercising or eating high-fat, high-calorie foods – can significantly increase your health problems. So, here are some healthful lifestyles for a person with diabetes:
- Eating healthful foods. Aim for a balanced diet low in fat, cholesterol and sugar. Work with a nutritionist, and particularly ask for help in developing meal plans and learning how to shop for groceries – eating well becomes much easier if you have healthful foods at hand.
- Exercising regularly. Physical activity improves circulation and helps you manage weight and stress levels, among other important benefits. Talk with your health care provider about choosing the best fitness options for you.
- Losing weight. Obesity increases the body’s resistance to insulin and contributes to heart disease, blood-vessel disease and many other health problems. By losing weight, many people with type 2 diabetes can decrease their diabetes medications. Ask your doctor or nutritionist for help in maintaining a sensible weight-loss program. Always remember never handle a pimple. The pimple becomes more inflamed. Handling spreads bacteria and germs, which caused the pimple, to other parts of the face and may cause scars.
Every half an hour hold an ice pack against the pimple for 2 minutes to reduce the inflammation. Holding a tea bag or a cotton ball dabbed in lemon juice against the pimple can also reduce the inflammation. A dab of toothpaste (not gel) applied before going to bed can also be soothing.
Apply a cream or ointment containing benzene peroxide or salicylic acid on the pimple or your entire face. Do not apply too much as these creams can dry the skin. Do not use it if your skin is sensitive. If you have no time for remedies and want to hide the pimple then cover the pimple with a flesh colored concealer. The concealer also hides the oily shine.
Wash your face 2 or 3 times a day with lukewarm salted water. Do not use soap as it dries the skin and may aggravate the pimple. Lukewarm salted water removes the oil without drying the skin too much.

Crowds have never been a problem before and neither has speaking up in front of a large room of people, but all of a sudden it seems to send you into a nervous fit of shaking, sweating, increased heart rate and feeling nauseous. The room swirls and it feels like fainting is the next thing that is going to happen. What is this? What has caused the individual to experience one or more of these symptoms?
What this sounds like is a panic attack. Some people may have always experienced panic attacks in certain situations and others may never have had them until it suddenly springs on them out of nowhere. There are many reasons for a person going through a panic attack and all depend on the person who is having them. It could be that some repressed past history has been triggered in the subconscious and has led to the panic attack, the memory of a traumatic experience is triggered and the person can’t push the memory out of their head, or it could be caused by something that is not as easily recognized. A panic attack is something that comes around when someone feels threatened by something and feels as though they are going to come to serious harm if they follow through with something, such as getting into a car after having been through a serious car accident a few months before. Many of the symptoms associated with panic attacks consist of shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, nausea, shaking, increased heart rate and even physical pain in the form of headaches. All these symptoms are caused by the mind in the attempt to avoid danger that can cause serious harm to the individual. It comes from the natural instinct of survival. Fear, which is really the root cause of panic attacks, is a natural instinctual emotion that is triggered when the individual senses they are in a dangerous situation that they need to get out of immediately. Unfortunately, many people can have their fear get out of hand and this is what can result in panic attacks. Read the rest of this entry »

Food is there to enjoy, which is often forgotten amid all the media hype surrounding various food items. Just remember to keep a check on portion size and energy density. Food habits change slowly, but:
- try new foods
- join a local cookery club to boost your culinary confidence
- have a positive attitude about food – it’s one of life’s pleasures
Exercise helps to maintain your body weight by balancing your energy intake (food eaten) with energy output (exercise). Take small steps if you’re new to exercise – use the stairs instead of the lift at work, get off the bus one stop early and walk the rest of the way, or try to exercise with a friend.
